Parliament voted 99 to 13: Lithuania's constitutional nuclear weapons ban could disappear
Not yet, but the process has started. On 22 September 2026 the Seimas backed, on first reading, 99 votes to 13 with 5 abstentions, an amendment removing Article 137 of the Constitution, which bans stationing weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases in Lithuania. A second reading is set for 6 October, a final vote for 12 January, both needing a two-thirds majority, 94 of 141 votes.
Article 137 of Lithuania's Constitution currently bans stationing weapons of mass destruction and foreign states' military bases on Lithuanian territory. That is the article the amendment would change.
