What does the AfD win in Saxony-Anhalt actually change for Lithuania?
So far nothing that can be shown in a document. It was a state election, not a federal one, the majority was missed by three seats, and the German brigade in Lithuania rests on a federal decision that a state parliament does not touch.
On 6 September the AfD took 43.8% of the vote in the Saxony-Anhalt state election. It is the party's strongest result in any German state election. (Euronews, 2026-09-06)
The second figure appears in fewer headlines. In an 83 seat state parliament the AfD holds 39 seats, and a majority takes 42. It is three short. (Al Jazeera, 2026-09-06)
The Christian Democrats, who governed the state until now, took 17.2%. In 2021 they had 37.1%. That is a larger movement than the AfD's own gain, and it is what makes the coalition arithmetic hard. (CNN, 2026-09-06)
